The cake was created in 1832 by 16-year-old apprentice, Franz Sacher for Austrian nobility, after the head chef got ill. After his death recipe for the cake was perfected to its current form by his oldest son Eduard and its recipe is still closely guarded secret.

The original version of this chocolate delicacy can only be found at 6 locations in the world. Hotels Sacher in Vienna and Salzburg, Cafes Sacher in Graz and Innsbruck, Sacher shop in Bolzano and Vienna airport. Around 360 thousand handmade Sacher Tortes are sold annually.
