Located close to the Ukrainian border, Maramures covers more than 3000 km2 of deep valleys, beautiful villages, steep hills and impressive mountains (up to 2303 m high). There you can find over 100 wooden churches (among which 8 are on the UNESCO list), over 60 typical villages and towns, a UNESCO protected natural reserve… and the only narrow gauge industrial steam train still in activity in Europe. Notable visits include: the cities of Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmației; the villages off the Iza, Mara and Vișeu Valleys, the wooden churches of Maramureș, Lăpuș and Chioar, the Merry Cemetery of Săpânța and the Barsana Monastery.
