For one month each year the Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt) in the city of lions attracts a lot of visitors. It can be quite busy in the alleys between the small huts, but the atmosphere is special! Take a stroll around and enjoy the scenery in the squares around the St. Blasii Cathedral and take in the Christmas feeling! Try local or international culinary delicacies or check out around 150 artisans and vendors. They offer a large variety of potential gifts like wooden toys, jewelry creations, fur-lined leather goods and illuminated Christmas stars. Brunswick’s Christmas Market is rightfully known as one of the most atmospheric and beautiful in all Germany.

From the end of November until the end of December the Christmas Market in Brunswick opens its gates, forming a little Christmas village in the heart of Brunswick. Although it can be very crowded, especially during the evenings and on the weekends, the illuminations and the small alleys create a cozy, charming and relaxed atmosphere.

Tower of the Town Hall

From Mondays to Fridays from 9 am until 3 pm it is possible, free of charge, to go up the town hall’s tower. You just have to ask the porter. In the picture you can see the tower at the corner of the town hall with its characteristic roof. In total it is 61m high and you will not regret its 161 steps as the view over Brunswick’s rooftops and the Christmas Market is stunning and the effort is definitely worth it!

Ferris wheel and carousels

As you can see in the above picture there are opportunities to enjoy Ferris wheel or carousels, which can’t be missing from a Christmas Market. The Ferris wheel also offers a good overview of the market and you can enjoy a peaceful moment above the crowd. The carousels are a good place to keep your kids busy for a moment while enjoying a drink.

Brunswick Cathedral

Besides climbing up the tower of the town hall the Brunswick Cathedral is also accessible to the public. It is nice to be out of the hurly-burly for a moment and to enjoy the peacefulness of the interior.

Typical Christmas Market drinks

Typical for German Christmas Markets are mulled wine (Glühwein) and barge bowls (Feuerzangenbowle). Just in front of the tower of the town hall there is a stall shaped like a Christmas pyramid. They offer both drinks and it is the perfect way to get the cold out of your bones.

Another nice place to enjoy a hot drink is in the moat of Brunswick. The area is a bit lower than the rest, creating a pleasant atmosphere in combination with the Christmas decorations.

Typical Christmas Market food

Other culinary highlights are the food of the Mumme host stall. Mumme is a thick malty extract mainly used to enhance foods and beverages. It has a high level of alcohol and sugar and was originally brewed as a beer with low to high alcohol content. The Mumme host stall also serves Mumme sausages and roasted meat too.

The Christmas Market of Brunswick offers a vast diversity of food, drinks and handcrafted art. There are a lot of tiny enjoyable stalls. If you are in the area during the right time you should stroll over the market and discover your personal highlights!
