The Lorelei or as in German Loreley is a 132 meter high state rock on the gorgeous Middle Rhine Valley's river at St.Goar. This famous rocks name means murmuring rock due to its small waterfall that creates a murmuring sound; but not only that, it also has a special echo which caused a myth of a siren who was sitting on the cliff above the Rhine, combing her golden hair, unwittingly distracted ship men with her beauty and song, causing them to crash on the rocks. The myth was so famous and loved, lot's of world famous artists used it into their novels, poems, songs and even movies and tv shows! But not only this epic rock makes this place famous, also the beauty of the Middle Rhine Valley lures everyone who visits here! The entire valley is so magnificent, it is called "The Romantic Rhine" and it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List!
The best time to visit the Middle Rhine Valley is definitely summer because it is the time when the hills of the valley are green and there are more cruises. The whole valleys hills are covered with lots of castles and ruins. You can reach here by train by following the most picturesque train ride of your life, if you choose to come here from Linke Rheinstrecke in English, "Left Rhine Line" which runs along the left (west) bank of the river from Cologne to Mainz, You can also use the boat The Köln-Düsseldorfer Rheinschiffahrt and use the line Cologne and Mainz, since the valley has the Rhine River and with a boat, you can see the famous rock of Loreley! When you reach the land, you can use the public transportation to explore the cutest towns on the earth or take another cruise and/or take castles and winery tours by day, sampling the wine at night!
There are lots of castles and ruins jewelled the Valley but my favourite is the Burg Eltz aka Eltz castle. This medieval castle on the hills of Moselle River is between Koblenz and Trier in Germany. The reason why I love this castle is: Eltz castle and the Lissingen Castle are the only two castles which were not destroyed in the whole Middle Rhine Valley! Still owned by the Eltz family but open to the public, this castle is full of rich treasury, gold, silver & porcelain artifacts, the armory of weapons and suits of armor!
And the last but not least, it is time for fireworks and festivals! If you want to enjoy a firework show while eating the best food and drink on a boat, you have to attend Rhine in Flames festival starting from May till September! There are also lots of concert, fairgrounds and fun activities on the ashore too.
