With about 82 million inhabitants, Germany is the most populous member state of the European Union. Germany's capital and largest metropolis is Berlin, while its largest conurbation is the Ruhr, with its main centres of Dortmund and Essen. The country's other major cities are Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Leipzig, Bremen, Dresden, Hannover, and Nuremberg. Elevation ranges from the mountains of the Alps in the south to the shores of the North Sea in the northwest and the Baltic Sea  in the northeast. The forested uplands of central Germany and the lowlands of northern Germany are traversed by such major rivers as the Rhine, Danube and Elbe. Germany's alpine glaciers are experiencing deglaciation. When thinking of Germany, beer, lederhosen and Alpine hats quickly come to mind, but these stereotypes mostly relate to Bavarian culture and do not represent Germany as a whole. Germany is a vast and diverse country with 16 culturally unique states that have been politically united since 1871. Even within states there is often considerable cultural diversity.

With 12.9 million inhabitants, it is Germany's second-most-populous state. Bavaria's capital and largest city, Munich, is known for the Oktoberfest, the Beer Festival, its art museums, as well as the Nymphenburg castle and its decorations. The picturesque Romantic Road begins in the northwestern city of Wurzburg, passes through rural villages and medieval towns, and ends in the foothills of the Alps, on the southern border of Germany. The Land is known for its lush mountainous landscapes, castles, Baroque towns and churches, as well as its famous beers. Bavaria hosts the headquarters of powerful companies such as BMW, Siemens, Allianz.

Its capital is Dresden, and its largest city is Leipzig. Saxony is particularly sought after by urban and cultural tourists. Families, sportspeople and holidaymakers who care about their fitness are more attracted to the medium-sized mountains and regions dominated by heathland, ponds and rivers. Particularly rich in castles and palaces, Saxony is one of the most beautiful regions of Germany, both for its architecture and its natural landscapes. Dresden, with its incomparable baroque and rococo historic center, could be the most beautiful city in Germany.

Frankfurt am Main

Hesse is a central German state known for forests and Wiesbaden, a Roman spa town and now the state's capital city. Amid the skyscrapers of Frankfurt am Main, the state's largest city and Germany's financial center, lie the Städel art museum and the Goethe House— the author's childhood home. Across the Rhine River, in the wider cultural region of Rhine-Hesse, is the city of Mainz with its 1,000-year-old cathedral. The contours of the Land of Hesse, as we know them today, were drawn only in 1946. In ancient times, the south of Hesse was marked by the Limes of Upper Germania and Rhetia, an archaeological monument of great importance. This legacy is still visible at some sites, such as the reconstruction of the Saalburg Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hessen offers many opportunities for active holidays: hiking, cycling, swimming and water sports on natural or artificial lakes in unspoiled landscapes such as the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park.

It is Germany’s third-largest state in terms of size and population. The state’s capital and largest city is Stuttgart, home to the Wilhelma, a royal estate with a zoo and gardens. Porsche and Mercedes-Benz have established their headquarters and museums in this city. Hohenzollern Castle, built in the 19th century, is located south of the Swabian Alps.The Land has many other tourist attractions, including the Black Forest (Schwarzwald), the Lake Constance (Bodensee), the Swabian Alb (Schwäbische Alb), the Danube and some historic towns such as Baden-Baden, Konstanz, Heidelberg, Freiburg and in Brisgau, Tübingen and Ulm. Its capital is Düsseldorf; the largest city is Cologne. Four of Germany's ten largest cities (Cologne, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, and Essen) are located in this state, as well as the second largest metropolitan area on the European continent, Rhine-Ruhr. Beethoven, Heinrich Heine or Joseph Beuys - Germany's most populous land has seen the birth of many well-known artists and is one of Europe's great cultural regions. Museums, theaters, orchestras and concert halls, musicals and other events attract millions of visitors every year. In addition to these cultural achievements, there are four World Heritage sites: Cologne Cathedral, Aachen Cathedral, Augustusburg Castle in Brühl and Zollverein Mine in Essen. The symbol of Cologne is even the most visited curiosity of Germany.

North Rhine-Westphalia

The southern areas like Dorset, Cornwall and Sussex are the best place to visit for beaches, sunshine and beautiful but rugged coastlines. The central area contains London and Birmingham, the two largest cities (10 million and 1 million people respectively) as well as slightly smaller cities like Liverpool and Manchester. These cities (the ones outside of London particularly) are becoming incredibly popular in the last few years, with amazing food, entertainment, art and culture growing year on year. The north of England holds much of the farming land, as well as stunning national parks like the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. London has several airports that are the gateway to almost anywhere you’d like to visit in the world, and there are regional airports in many of the smaller cities as well, with Birmingham Airport and Liverpool Airport being amongst the cheapest. Getting around the country is easy and hassle-free, if slightly more expensive than public transport in mainland Europe. The trains run very well, and are clean, but they are quite expensive. Perhaps the best way to get around is by bus with two main companies – Megabus and National Express. English cuisine is really a mix of everything, with more than 50,000 pubs to find traditional England food, as well as a lot of Indian, Chinese food in almost every town and city as well.

England

With a steadily growing population of approximately 3.7 million, Berlin is the second most populous city in the European Union behind London. The Holocaust Memorial and the remaining parts of the Berlin Wall, on which graffiti have been painted, are witnesses of its tumultuous past. Divided in two separate countries during the Cold War era, Germany adopted the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin (built in the eighteenth century) as a symbol of its reunification. The city is also famous for its artistic scene and its modern monuments, such as the Berlin Philharmonie, a building built in 1963 whose roof has a particular geometric shape. Regarded nowadays as one of the trendiest hubs on the continent, Berlin attracts 15 million visitors every year. You will see there all the trends of postmodernity: a lot of plastic art and cinema, architecture, music, theater, dance and street art.

Hamburg

It is home to more than 5 millions inhabitants. Hamburg is located on the Elbe a few kilometers from the North Sea. Widely bombed during the Second World War, Hamburg has preserved today some traces of its historical heritage. The city is well known for its nightlife, and famous St. Paul's district. Tourists go there to enjoy its cultural vitality: events, museums (including the Museum of Fine Arts and Decorative Arts), opera, concerts and a famous nightlife. It has preserved spaces of greenery which allow to breathe fresh air after wandering downtown. These places are found especially on the banks of the Alster. The city also has a municipal park and a botanical garden named 'Planten a Blomen'.

Bremen

The state consists of the city of Bremen itself as well as the small exclave of Bremerhaven in Northern Germany, surrounded by the larger state of Lower Saxony. Located in northwestern Germany, this city of 550,000 inhabitants is above all an important port, the second in Germany after Hamburg, and its reputation goes back to the Middle Ages, as a trade center for goods like wheat, barley, wine, or oils. Bremen is also a dynamic industrial center that has built its reputation on shipbuilding, aeronautics, agribusiness and automotive. Its historical heritage is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Outside of the old town, you can venture into the Schnoor district and visit its cafes, craft stalls and art galleries. This district remains picturesque because of the structure of its alleys. Finally, nostalgic ones can also walk on the side of the medieval port of Bremen, the famous Schlachte, not to be mistaken with the modern harbour, which is located a few kilometers from the historic port. You will find nice bars and pub.
