Prague’s Breathtaking Charles Bridge

Charles Bridge (Karluv most) is one of the most visited bridges in Europe. It connects Prague’s old town with Mala Strana (Lesser town) district.

Depending on where you are in the city, there are numerous ways to find your way to Charles bridge. If you are in the Ol[d Town Square](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/prague-s-old-town-4m9g), make your way through the small streets Male namesti and Karlova (Charles street), which will guide you towards Charles Bridge. If you are however moving by public transportation from Staromestska (metro/tram), then walk along Krizovnicka street until you reach the bridge. During the walk you will already get a stunning view of the bridge from the side, which is definitely breathtaking. 

Charles Bridge is built over river Vltava, connecting the Prague old town and Prague Castle on Mala Strana. The construction of the bridge started in 1357 during King Charles IV. Along the 620-meter long bridge there are 30 different statues of saints built in an impressive baroque style. As you enter the bridge, you will notice a rather special atmosphere, created by numerous musicians and bands playing classical music, as well as artists selling their unique pieces. You may also choose to get your own portrait sketched, as you gaze over the bridge while enjoying the breathtaking view of the city.

As you come to the end of the bridge you will enter the Mala Strana, a hillside district of the city with a stunning view of the Ol[d Town.](https://www.livetheworld.com/post/prague-s-old-town-4m9g) Right before you leave the bridge, take the stairs on the left side of the bridge; these will lead you to small old style streets and towards the John Lennon Wall. For years and years this wall has been filled with graffiti and lyrics from the Beatles’ songs. It’s quite an art piece. Another unusual sight you will come across if you keep walking straight along the river, is the Wallenstein Garden, which has become a big attraction due to peacocks, which are roaming around the garden freely.

The right side of the bridge is called the Kampa island, and offers an amazing view of the river and the old town. This is a well-known area especially for Prague’s fine dinning. You can check out the Kampa Park or Hegertova Cihelna restaurants, if you are looking for a more special night out. On the Kampa island you will also find the Franz Kafka museum, displaying the Czech author’s books, letters and diaries. The gift shop is also really worth checking out. 

Once in Mala Strana, you can make your way up to the Prague Castle, which will require a bit of walking up the hill. But don’t you get desperate. Once on the top, you will have the most amazing view of the entire city, which makes the walk worthwhile. The Prague castle is one of the most important symbols of Czechia, built in the 9th century, and it was the governing seat for kings, Holy Roman Emperors and Presidents. Today this is the official office of the Czech President. FYI: the Prague Castle is also in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest castle in the world! 

Should you decide to tour around Mala Strana and Charles Bridge during the night, then the Karlovy Lazne should definitely be on your list. This nightclub is the biggest club in Central Europe, divided into 5 floors, where each floor plays different music. If clubbing and nightlife is not your cup of tea, then you may also wish to stop at the Prague Beer Museum for a choice of over 30 Czech beers and Czech snacks.
